ViolaScope is a macOS application for reviewing, rating, comparing and organizing photo collections. The information required for these workflows is processed locally on the Mac.
This can include image files, file information, EXIF metadata, XMP metadata, ratings, color labels, favorites, tags, project information, fingerprints, checksums, location information and other information required to maintain the ViolaScope project state.
ViolaScope does not operate its own servers for uploading or processing your photos, metadata, project information or location information.
Data that remains solely on your Mac or on storage selected by you is not transmitted to a ViolaScope server.
ViolaScope is designed so that original source photos remain unchanged during the normal review workflow.
External photo folders can be used as temporary review sources. Images only become part of the permanent ViolaScope project through an explicit project or export workflow.
ViolaScope is not a backup system. Users are advised to maintain an independent and current backup of important original photographs and other irreplaceable files.
Safety and backup information displayed by the application is operational guidance intended to help protect valuable data. It is not an end-user license agreement and does not require users to waive statutory rights.
ViolaScope can process location information contained in image metadata, XMP sidecar files and GPX tracks. The application can also work with project-specific map positions and reference-photo information.
This information is processed as part of the local photo and project workflow and is not uploaded to a ViolaScope-operated server.
If no suitable photo or GPX position is available, ViolaScope can request the current location of the Mac in order to position the map. This occurs only after macOS Location Services permission has been granted by the user.
ViolaScope requests the location for this purpose when required and does not use it to create a ViolaScope user-location profile.
Location permission can be changed or revoked in macOS System Settings under Privacy & Security and Location Services.
The map interface uses Apple MapKit and Apple Maps. Apple system frameworks and services may communicate with Apple in order to provide map content and related system functionality. These Apple services are governed by Apple's applicable terms and privacy practices.
ViolaScope does not include its own advertising system and does not use proprietary analytics, telemetry or tracking infrastructure to monitor application usage.
The application does not include third-party advertising SDKs or a dedicated third-party crash-reporting service integrated by ViolaScope.
ViolaScope does not sell application user data and does not use application data for cross-service advertising tracking.
ViolaScope project information and application data are stored locally on the Mac or on storage selected by the user according to the relevant application workflow.
ViolaScope does not maintain a server-side user account or a ViolaScope cloud copy of this local photo and project data.
Users remain in control of their local project folders and files and can remove them using the applicable ViolaScope workflow or normal macOS file-management tools where appropriate.
Copies or backups that the user has created independently must be deleted separately if they are no longer required.
ViolaScope may create local safety copies in specific technical situations, such as a catalog migration. Such local backup data remains on the user's Mac and is separate from backups of the user's original photographs.
Because this application data is not stored in a ViolaScope server account, there is no remote ViolaScope account containing these local project files that must be deleted by contacting ViolaScope.

Website hosting is separate from processing performed by the ViolaScope application. Visiting violascope.com can therefore result in website connection data being processed by the hosting infrastructure even though the ViolaScope app itself does not transmit photo or project data to IONOS.
According to the information currently provided by IONOS for its Webhosting product, website visitor information includes the requested page or file, referrer, browser type and version, operating system, device type, time of access and an IP address in anonymized form.
IONOS states that these Webhosting visitor data are stored for eight weeks.
The ViolaScope website does not add its own advertising or marketing tracking.
IONOS WebAnalytics can process statistical website usage information as part of the hosting service. According to IONOS, WebAnalytics uses a pixel or log-file based mechanism, does not use cookies and anonymizes the visitor's IP address after transmission.
ViolaScope does not add an additional proprietary analytics or tracking layer to the website.
Website hosting and WebAnalytics concern visits to violascope.com and are separate from the local processing of photos and projects by the ViolaScope macOS application.
You can contact ViolaScope directly by email or by using the online contact form on the support page.
When you use the contact form, the optional name, your email address, subject and message are processed so that your enquiry can be received and answered. The form also contains a hidden anti-spam field that is not intended to be completed by users.
The form is processed by ViolaScope's own
contact.php endpoint on the website.
No external form provider, advertising service or
CAPTCHA provider is used. The submitted information
is validated and forwarded by email to
support@violascope.com
.
The form itself does not create a separate contact
database or a separate server-side archive of the
submitted message.
If your enquiry concerns a contract, a purchase or steps requested before entering into a contract, processing is based on Article 6(1)(b) GDPR where applicable. Other support and general enquiries are processed on the basis of the legitimate interest in receiving, answering and documenting enquiries under Article 6(1)(f) GDPR.
Support correspondence is retained for as long as necessary to handle the request and reasonable follow-up communication. Information may be retained for longer where this is required by applicable legal obligations or is necessary for the establishment, exercise or defence of legal claims.
You may request deletion of support correspondence where no overriding legal reason requires continued retention by contacting support@violascope.com .
Please do not send original photos unless they are actually required to investigate a specific problem. Support will ask for an original file explicitly when such a file is necessary.
ViolaScope does not send user photos, photo metadata, project information or location information to ViolaScope-operated analytics, advertising or cloud services.
Apple system services such as MapKit, Apple Maps and Location Services operate as Apple platform services under Apple's applicable terms and privacy practices.
The ViolaScope website uses IONOS as its hosting provider. Hosting-related processing is limited to the operation, security and statistical evaluation of the website as described in this policy.
Where service providers process personal data on behalf of ViolaScope, they are used subject to applicable data-protection requirements.
Permissions controlled by macOS, such as access to Location Services, can be changed or revoked at any time through the corresponding macOS privacy settings.
Revoking a system permission may prevent the corresponding ViolaScope function from operating until permission is granted again.
Requests concerning personal data processed through support or the ViolaScope website can be sent to support@violascope.com .
Where the General Data Protection Regulation applies, you may have rights including access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection, subject to the applicable legal requirements.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a competent data protection supervisory authority.
Requests relating to privacy can be sent to support@violascope.com .
This privacy policy may be updated when the application, website, hosting setup, distribution model or legal requirements change.
